Smoke Signals, Wednesday, January 28, 1976 — PAGE 3 Fishing Techniques Two Chowan players, sophomore and co-captain Lisa Dabney, left, of Stauton, Va., and freshman Kathy Stover of Williamsport, Md., have been named to the North Carolina Junior College All Tournament Volleyball Team for helping Chowan place second. Lady VoNeyball Braves Finish Second Place Chowan College’s women’s volleyball team ended its season with a second place finish in the recent North Carolina Junior College State Tournament in Charlotte, N.C. Two Chowan players, sophomore and co-captain Lisa Dabney of Staunton, Va. and freshman Kathy Stover of Williamsport, Md., were named to the Junior College All Tour nament Volleyball Team. Chowan opened with a 15-13 and 15-5 win over Wingate College. In the next match against powerful Louisburg, Chowan lost the first game 15-7. In the second game, the Lady Braves played one of their best games of the season before bowing, 13-11, when time ran out. Bait Casters Land Big Ones When you’re angling for an A in a college course, you might try catching a large Bluefish. This is sound advice if the course you happen to be taking is Fishing Techniques, offered by Chowan College’s physical education department to teach the skills of fishing and recreational value of the sport. The instructor, Jerry Hawkins, recently took 11 of his students to Oregon Inlet. They had practiced bait casting on the shore of Chowan’s scenic lake. But Hawkins, an assistant football coach who also coaches baseball, wanted them to take a crack at the real thing. You can bet your Hula Popper Hawkins will have to hand out some mighty fine grades. Using light tackle, the students landed 16 Bluefish and hooked and lost another 25-30. They caught the Blues surf casting on the South Point of Pea Island. The largest weighed 15 pounds. The students managed to save only eight after giving the others away at service stations and other stops on the return trip. Hawkins reports the all-male fishing trip may be a thing to enroll in Fishing Techniques when the spring semester begins in January. -Wrestling- Lack of Experience Hurts The Brave wrestlers lost a close match to Liberty Baptist College, Coach Nelson claimed. Hie Braves lost four matches on inexperience and won two, by Loyd Lee and Marty Pilarski. Coach Nelson said, “we were beaten by inexperience and mistakes and the score was no indication of the match. Chowan bounced back with a 15-4, 15-11 victory over Wingate to stay alive in the double elimination meet and earn a shot at the crown against Louisburg. After playing three matches, including six games, Chowan had little energy left as Louisburg captured the championship, 15-7 and 15-4. Winning the runnerup trophy helped take the sting out of a 1-11 regular season record for Coach Janet Collins’ players. Four of the seven starters were fresh men. In all, 11 freshmen played on the varsity and junior varsity teams. Mrs. Collins believes the lady Braves will be considerably stronger next year building on the returning players. These Chowan College students returned with eight of the 1i Bluefish they caught at the Outer Banks as part of a Fishing Techniques course taught by Jerry Hawkins, Left.
